In 1820-22, during the siege of Ioannina by the Sultan troops, a large part of the city and most of its churches were destroyed. Since then, with the support of wealthy expats from Epirus, many of the city’s churches have been reconstructed/renovated, mostly as large-scale, three-aisled basilicas with complex dome structures, while murals were painted with obvious influences from western art.
